Fans will NOT be allowed to attend the New Mexico State Basketball Championships from Thursday through the conclusion of the tournament on Saturday.

The decision, announced by the New Mexico Activities Association on Wednesday night, is due to the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

The NMAA said it made the decision after recommendations by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Department of Health.

The games will still be played, but only limited personnel will be allowed to attend. Each game will be capped at 100 people, which includes the teams.

Fans can watch the games online at NFHS Network. A subscription fee of $10.99 will provide full access to all state games.

The University of New Mexico also announced that fans will NOT be allowed to attend the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at Albuquerque’s Convention Center.

The school has also banned fans from all of the Lobos’ spring sports events.

On Wednesday, the New Mexico Department of Health confirmed that four people in New Mexico have tested presumptive positive for COVID-19.

UNM had the following release on Wednesday:

Following on a directive from NCAA President Mark Emmert regarding NCAA Championships, the University of New Mexico will limit admittance to all home events and practices for the foreseeable future, announced director of athletics Eddie Nuñez.

The 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships will still be held as scheduled at the Albuquerque Convention Center, hosted by UNM, but only essential personnel and family will be allowed in attendance.

The University of New Mexico athletic department will follow the NCAA’s protocol for all home events and practices for the time being.  All UNM home athletic events and practices will be conducted with essential personnel only, and limited family.  No fans will be allowed at practices or games at this time.  Media will still be able to attend practices and games, but interviews will be modified for safety concerns via recommended guidelines.
