University of New Mexico football coach Bob Davie exited Saturday’s Lobo-Sam Houston State game in an ambulance, according to a UNM release.

But a second release late Saturday night read:

On behalf of the Davie family, we would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Coach Davie is doing well and recovering, he is surrounded by family and your continued thoughts, prayers, and privacy are greatly appreciated during this time.”

Eyewitnesses spotted Davie’s wife, JoAnne in the front seat of the ambulance, which whisked Davie away after UNM’s 39-31 season-opening win at Dreamstyle Stadium.

UNM released a statement from athletic director regarding Davie 53 minutes after the end of the game.

“Immediately following tonight’s football game between the University of New Mexico and Sam Houston State University, Lobo Head Coach Bob Davie was taken to the hospital (to University of New Mexico Hospital) as a result of what appeared to be a serious medical incident,” Nunez said in the statement. “The University will release more information as it becomes available.

“We ask that you keep the Davie family in your prayers.”

The Albuquerque Journal reported that it was believed Davie had “heart trouble.” UNM deputy athletic director David Williams appeared at the postgame news conference, saying the news conference was canceled due to an “incident with Coach Davie.”

Enchantment Sports was told, according to one of the Lobos, that Davie, who is one month shy of his 65th birthday, collapsed in the locker room after the game.

The Davie family released an unattributed statement through UNM just before 11 p.m.

“On behalf of the Davie family, we would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers,” the statement read. “Coach Davie is doing well and recovering, he is surrounded by family and your continued thoughts, prayers, and privacy are greatly appreciated during this time.”
