Eldorado had a long jaunt, but made the most of it with a 28-14 upset of sixth-ranked Hobbs (7-4) on Friday night in the first round of the Class 6A state high school football playoffs. The 11th-seeded EHS Eagles (7-4) hit the road again next week for a quarterfinal game against third-seeded Centennial (10-0).
Albuquerque’s Cibola also pulled off a road upset. The 12th-seeded Cougars (6-5) won 14-7 at Las Cruces Mayfield (6-5). Cibola plays fourth-seeded Volcano Vista next week.
Eighth-seeded Manzano won its fifth straight by hammering ninth-seeded Rio Rancho 40-14 on Friday. The Rams end the season 4-7. The defending state champion Monarchs (7-4) play top-seeded Cleveland (10-0) next week.
The final first-round game in 6A is today at 1 p.m. in Las Cruces at the Field of Dreams, with the seventh-seeded Bulldawgs (6-4) playing host to tenth-seeded Clovis (4-6). That winner plays second-seeded La Cueva (10-0) next week.
Senior safety Garrett Moseley (photo) had two interceptions and senior quarterback Manny Sanchez-Vargas threw four touchdowns as Valley cruised past Santa Teresa 28-12 on Friday night at Mile Stadium.
The first-round Class 5A victory sends the eighth-seeded Vikings to Roswell next week for a quarterfinal game against the top-seeded Coyotes. Roswell had a bye in the first round.
Elsewhere, sixth-seeded Belen hammered Valencia 41-21 on Friday and next faces third-seeded Los Lunas for the fourth time in the past two seasons. Also, fifth-seeded Piedra Vista ripped 12th-seeded Del Norte 55-35. The Panthers are at fourth-seeded and defending state champion Artesia in the quarterfinals next week.
The final first-round game is tonight at 7 when Farmington plays at Deming. That winner gets a shot at No. 2 Goddard next week.
