Enchantment Sports staff report
Finally, it’s out — and Weir all looking forward to it.
On Wednesday evening, the long-awaited complete University of New Mexico men’s basketball schedule was released. The Mountain West had previously released its schedule of league games, and UNM has now put out its 12 conference contests.
Eight of the nonconference games are scheduled for Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit, which gives the Lobos 17 home appearances this season.
“We are ecstatic about the depth of competition in this schedule,” Lobo coach Paul Weir said in a news release. “It is exactly what we set out to do when we put it together. To be able to have this type of competitiveness top to bottom is not just a major challenge for our team but it also presents us ample opportunity to position ourselves for postseason play.
Fan expectations for Weir’s Wolves are extremely high this season, after the Lobos had a tremendous late-season surge and nearly grabbed the MW’s automatic spot in the NCAA Tournament, but came up just short. UNM lost 82-75 in a game it led until the final four minutes. The Lobos had won seven straight heading into the game.
Either CBS Sports Network, AT&T SportsNet or an ESPN channel will televise 22 of the Lobos’ 30 games, including all 18 Mountain West contests.
The Lobos also play one game, against the University of Southwest, in Hobbs. It’s set for Dec. 30.
“Taking the Lobos to Hobbs is something we are also incredibly excited about,” Weir said. “We are hoping it can create many meaningful opportunities for both our
direct and extended communities.”
